An Eco-Friendly household doesn’t just benefit the environment, it also may improve living costs, health benefits and make a better planet for the future generation. We are exposed to tens of thousands of chemicals on a daily basis that humans have never been exposed to before.

Finding Your Own Reason To Change:

Is it for your own personal health gain?

Is it the environmental aspect?

Is it because you don’t want to live in a world of synthetics and excess?

Is there illness in your family that nothing else seems to fix and you’d like to explore a world of natural products and lowering your toxic load?

Is it simply you’d like to swap your daily products with ones that are organic?

What Can I Do To Change?

Buy Less, consider if you really need it.  Can you recycle it?  Can it be purchased from an opportunity store – give something a second life.  Re-use, Re-cycle.

Think about what you are using to clean your home, is it toxic?  Other options would be to look at natural choices like aromatherapy.  Removing the “Fake” smells from your home is always a great place to start. If it says ‘Fragrancé’ then you should probably consider what other options are out there.  To avoid products with fragrance/perfume on the label look for products with a simple ingredients list.  If you would prefer to use a scented product maybe purchase an unscented product and add some essential oils.  Plant based products work well here.  It is easy to make your own cleaners and adding a couple of drops of your favourite essential oil will make your home smell amazing.

Look at what you are putting on/in your body.  What is it made from?  Can you read the list of ingredients easily? You can easily make your own and go down the DIY path or choose low toxic brands.  Your skin and body will thank you for it. You could start with a really easy DIY lip scrub.

Just take 1 tsp coconut oil and 1 tbsp brown sugar, mix well in a bowl, add 1 drop of peppermint essential oil (or you could use spearmint, wild orange etc) and mix very well.

Use a small amount and rub on the lips for about 30 seconds, wipe or if you like you could lick the scrub off (no nasty’s here).

Beautiful lips are so easy to maintain with this scrub. Of course a 100% pure essential oil that is food grade would be essential.

Ditch the plastic, use reusable bottles, reusable cups, reusable straws and cutlery.  Beeswax wraps make a great alternative to plastic film in the kitchen.  Make or buy your own produce bags and take reusable bags to do your groceries.

A Small Change Is Still A Change!

Remember forward is forward and be proud of the little change that you will make for yourself today.

A few easy steps to making your house Eco-Friendly may consists of :-

  • Starting your own compost- Why would you do this?  You could lower the waste in your home and composting helps reduce the need for chemical fertilizers. It also reduces methane emissions from landfills and lowers your carbon footprint. The main steps to starting your composting would be to :
    • first start your compost pile on dirt allowing for creators such as worms to get into the compost.
    • Secondly  Lay twigs or straw first, a few inches deep. This aids drainage and helps aerate the pile.
    • The next step would be to add manure to help speed the process along.
    • The next step includes watering and keeping the compost moist.
    • This  step is to cover with anything you have – wood, plastic sheeting, carpet scraps. Covering helps retain moisture and heat and finally turn the compost

  • Another way of making an eco friendly house is by changing the products you use in your home and the two best ways to do this is by finding or making natural products which are less harmful to your family.  For example :  Lemon essential oil has a clean scent.  It is fabulous in homemade cleaning recipes.  Naturally antibacterial and antiviral, lemon is commonly used to degrease and freshen the air.  Use it to clean stubborn stains, deodorise your fridge, or add to the diffuser, Lemon and Wild Orange are a beautiful combination. Lemon and Lavender essential oil smells amazing in your floor cleaning water, just a couple of drops will smell and clean amazingly.  A multi-purpose cleaning spray is a fabulous DIY in a 500ml glass spray bottle add 300ml cooled boiled water, 200ml plain white vinegar, around a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid and approximately 10-15 drops of lemon essential oil.  Mix well.  Shake well before each use.

Another way this can be done is shopping at places like https://www.zeroco.com.au/collections/shop-all-products this company allows for you to buy a product such as body wash and once you have used it you send the container back to them so it can be sent back to you in the same container with new soap inside allowing for you to use less plastics.

  • Swapping to LED lights.   You will not only use less electricity but you will also make your home more environmentally-friendly. Saving on the electricity bill has got to be a huge incentive.

  • Try to buy recycled products – re-use, re-cycle.  We throw so many products away these days.  Why not see if it is something that can be reused, or can you purchase pre loved, a great way to re- use and save money at the same time.

Remember forward is forward and be proud of the little change that you will make for yourself today.
